Rehab for Veterans in Arizona
A men’s program founded by a first responder who came home when nineteen of his brothers did not. PTSD and addiction treated by one team, at the same time, for as long as it takes.
- Licensed for dual diagnosis: PTSD, anxiety and depression alongside the addiction
- EMDR and trauma-focused therapy from master’s level clinicians
- We work with TRICARE West policies, and verify before anything is booked
- Around ninety days, stepping down, with the same team the whole way

How Veterans Pay for Rehab: VA, TRICARE and Insurance
The VA is usually the obstacle rather than the program, so this is the part worth reading first. Admissions tells you which of the three is realistic for you on the first call.
- 01
A Community Care referral
Holdfast is not a VA facility and does not hold a VA Community Care contract. Referrals through the Community Care network do still reach us, because a VA care team can send one. Getting it approved takes persistence with your own care team, and admissions will tell you exactly what to ask them for rather than leaving you to guess.
- 02
TRICARE West
We work with some TRICARE West policies, and what a specific plan covers depends on the plan and the level of care. Verification is the only thing that answers it honestly, and it takes one call with your plan details to hand.
How TRICARE works here - 03
Commercial insurance or self-pay
Plenty of veterans here are covered through an employer, a spouse or their own policy rather than through the VA at all. Much of our care is delivered out of network, which often still carries real benefits, and admissions will tell you what yours actually pays.

Why veterans come here
PTSD and Addiction Treatment, Under One Team
If you have already been placed somewhere by a system, more than once, this is what tends to be different about choosing it yourself.
Built by someone who came back
Brendan McDonough was the Granite Mountain Hotshots lookout, and the only one of the crew to survive the day nineteen did not.
PTSD treated as the cause
EMDR and trauma-focused therapy run alongside the substance use work, not after it. Every clinician is master’s level.
Licensed for dual diagnosis
PTSD, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder handled by the same team as the addiction, at the same time.
Ninety days, not twenty-eight
Inpatient care steps down through PHP and IOP with one clinical team. A month is the length that failed most men here.
Survivor Guilt Is Where This Program Started
- Brendan McDonough was the Granite Mountain Hotshots lookout on the day the crew was lost
- Survivor guilt, substance use and a long rebuild followed, which is why this program treats trauma first
- Veterans and first responders are in the room most of the time, so you stop explaining yourself sooner

Veterans Drug Rehab: Common Questions

- Are you a VA hospital or a VA Community Care provider?
- Neither, and it matters that we say so plainly. Holdfast is a private program in Arizona. We do not hold a VA Community Care contract. What does happen is that VA care teams send Community Care referrals to us, and admissions will walk you through what to ask your team for. If that route stays closed, TRICARE West, commercial insurance and self-pay are the other three doors.
- Do you take TRICARE?
- We work with some TRICARE West policies. What any specific plan covers depends on the plan, the region and the level of care, so verification is the only honest answer. Admissions needs the plan, whether it is Prime or Select, and whether the beneficiary is the service member or a family member. The detail is on the TRICARE page.
- I have already been through VA programs. Why would this be different?
- Most veterans who call here are describing a third or fourth attempt, so this is the normal case rather than the hard one. Two things usually changed: the length, because care here runs around ninety days and steps down through residential, PHP and IOP rather than ending, and the trauma work, which runs the whole way through rather than being handled somewhere else by someone else.
- Can you treat PTSD and addiction at the same time?
- That is what a dual diagnosis license means and it is what the program is built around. EMDR, trauma-focused therapy and psychiatric care run alongside the substance use treatment with one team holding both. Treating them separately is what sends a lot of men back out still carrying the thing that started it.
- I need to detox first. Can you help?
- We are not a detox facility and we will tell you that on the first call rather than after you arrive. Admissions will help you find one, speak to them directly on your behalf, and bring you here as soon as you are medically cleared. Whether your VA benefits cover that detox is a question for your VA care team, and it is worth asking them specifically. More on how this works is on the detox page.
- Do I have to be a Christian?
- No. Men arrive doubting, angry at God, or with no faith at all, and nobody signs anything to get in. The program is built on Christian ground and it is nondenominational. Many men find the identity work is the part that finally answers a question the clinical work could not reach.
- I am out of state. Does that work?
- Most men here traveled, and several found us from the other side of the country. Flights land at Phoenix Sky Harbor and someone collects you. Admissions sorts the timing out with you before anything is booked. Traveling to treatment covers the logistics.
- Is it men only?
- Yes, every level of care. For men who served in a unit, a room with no women in it tends to get to the true thing faster, and the brotherhood is what alumni come back for. There are veterans and first responders in the building most of the time.

I was hesitant on coming to this facility, but I'm very glad I did. It definitely enforces the guidelines for building a structured life while having some freedom to still feel like a person. The camaraderie and brothers you make here helped with my recovery exponentially. The staff and therapists at Holdfast take your issues and needs to heart and assist to the best of their abilities.
Alec ReddingVerified Google reviewHoldfast was instrumental in getting my loved one on the road to recovery. Very thankful for the faith based approach while also applying expertise in the field of addiction and recovery. A wonderful ratio of providers to patients for one on one therapy and support. My loved one left after completing a 90 day program with a plan, community and a sponsor. A new lease on life! Our biggest thanks to Holdfast and prayers for the success of your future clients.
Dana KaupieVerified Google reviewHoldFast is a place where God restored me from the inside out. It’s more than a recovery program, it’s a Christ-centered brotherhood that helped me rebuild my life on solid ground. Through prayer, Scripture, and real accountability, I learned how to cling to God in every season and rediscovered my identity in Christ building a life of sobriety. I leave HoldFast renewed, anchored, and grateful for the grace and strength I found here, taking it one day at a time.
Scott ThibodauxVerified Google reviewCombination of Neuro Faith' Therapist, Christian based teachings. Listening and sharing each clients experiences and thoughts about we were being taught in group meetings. Also encouraged to go to AA meetings, Church and Bible Study. I haven't sobriety for 96 Days straight since i was 15. Daily prayer and meditation combined with the Hold Fast App daily reflection schedule allowed me to stay focused on my goals of God and sobriety. I knew no one in Prescott when I moved here, now I have a brotherhood and Fellowship of Men that 100% i can count on. I am currently on Step 11 and plan on Sponsoring others as well as continuing in volunteering for others needs and bringing others to sobriety. I have a beautiful new life now that. Hold Fast brought me back ty rean honest self. Thank you Staff. I am now closer with my family.
