Alcohol is an excellent short-term treatment for anxiety, which is the entire problem and the reason stopping makes it worse before it makes it better.
Treated alongside the substance use rather than after it
Panic that arrives once the substance is gone is expected and planned for
Polyvagal-informed therapy and HeartMath®, taught as skills you keep
A substance use program licensed for dual diagnosis, not a mental health facility
Withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives can look exactly like severe anxiety, and it can be medically serious. If that is where you are, somewhere medical comes first and admissions arranges it. how we handle detox.
Inside the program
Treatment at Holdfast
The same clinical spine as every level of care, pointed at this in particular.
Nervous system work rather than talk alone: polyvagal-informed therapy and HeartMath®
A prescriber on site, and a careful conversation about what is safe to use for anxiety in recovery
trauma and PTSD work, because a lot of what is called anxiety is a body still reacting to something
Structure, which does more for anticipatory anxiety than most men expect
The Root Underneath It
A man who has been drinking at his anxiety for ten years has ten years of not practising anything else. The work is partly treating the anxiety and partly building the tolerance that never got built, which takes longer than detox and is the reason the stay is around ninety days.
No. This is a substance use program licensed to treat the anxiety that comes with it, which is not the same as a standalone mental health facility. Admissions will say so on the call rather than after you arrive.
Will I be given benzodiazepines for the anxiety?
That is a clinical decision made by a prescriber who knows your history, and for a man whose problem is benzodiazepine dependence the answer is usually no. There are other medications and there is a lot of non-medication work, which is most of what the week is.
My anxiety got much worse when I stopped drinking. Is that normal?
Yes, and it catches men out. Alcohol suppresses the system that manages anxiety, and removing it leaves that system running hot for weeks or months. It settles, it is treatable, and knowing it is coming makes it survivable.

Other Conditions Treated
Most men arrive with more than one of these, which is the normal case rather than a complication.
I was hesitant on coming to this facility, but I'm very glad I did. It definitely enforces the guidelines for building a structured life while having some freedom to still feel like a person. The camaraderie and brothers you make here helped with my recovery exponentially. The staff and therapists at Holdfast take your issues and needs to heart and assist to the best of their abilities.

Holdfast was instrumental in getting my loved one on the road to recovery. Very thankful for the faith based approach while also applying expertise in the field of addiction and recovery. A wonderful ratio of providers to patients for one on one therapy and support. My loved one left after completing a 90 day program with a plan, community and a sponsor. A new lease on life! Our biggest thanks to Holdfast and prayers for the success of your future clients.

HoldFast is a place where God restored me from the inside out. It’s more than a recovery program, it’s a Christ-centered brotherhood that helped me rebuild my life on solid ground. Through prayer, Scripture, and real accountability, I learned how to cling to God in every season and rediscovered my identity in Christ building a life of sobriety. I leave HoldFast renewed, anchored, and grateful for the grace and strength I found here, taking it one day at a time.
As Iron Sharpens Iron, So One Man Sharpens Another.
Proverbs 27:17
Men walk in here out of options and walk out with a brotherhood, a purpose and something that holds. It starts with one call, and you can make it right now.
